Diotima and Co challenges Ethica Diamonds over ‘misleading’ ad

Diotima and Co Limited was recently advised by Law firm Gunnercooke on a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regarding “misleading” advertising of diamonds. The challenge was made by the company against Kinetique Limited which trades as Ethica Diamonds, on the grounds that its diamonds were made of substitute materials and therefore an advertisement for ‘diamonds’ was misleading to consumers. The complaint referred to The National Association of Jewellers’ ‘Diamond Terminology Guideline’. The claim has been upheld by the ASA with a new ruling stating that the ad has breached “multiple codes” and that future advertising must ensure that the term diamond is accompanied by an “identifier” to make clear the nature of the product. The company based in Cornwall, specialised in diamond alternative technologies and laboratory grown diamonds and precious gems. The ASA ruling considered that consumers would be “unlikely” to be aware of the range of diamond alternatives th

Jewelled spectacles to auction for £4m at Sotheby’s

A pair of unseen jewelled spectacles will be auctioned in London at Sotheby’s for the first time, with estimates of £1.5 – £2.5m each. Ahead of the sale in October, the spectacles are set to go on view to the public for the first time, with an exhibition in Hong Kong between 7-11 October and in London between 22-26 October. Commissioned by an unknown prince in 17th Century Mughal India, an artist shaped a diamond, weighing over two hundred carats, and a brilliant emerald, weighing at least three hundred carats. No comparable example of either is known to exist, said Sotheby’s. In circa 1890, the lenses were placed in new frames and decorated with rose-cut diamonds. The diamonds are cleaved as a pair from a single natural diamond which is “possibly the largest ever found”, and they now together weigh twenty-five carats.  The faceting around the edge “displays extreme skill” and the teardrop-shaped emeralds originate from a single natural Colombian emerald, now weighing 27 carats.

Navratri, also known as Nauratri, is a Hindu festival celebrated across India and has great significance. In the term Navratri, ‘Nav’ stands for nine, and ‘Ratri’ stands for the night, together meaning the festival of nine nights, followed by the tenth day known as Dussehra. This festival is celebrated during the autumn of every year. If you are not familiar with this festival and wonder why Navratri is celebrated, let me tell you a little about it. During this time of Navratri, Hindus pray to the Goddess of strength – Durga in her nine forms, seeking blessings for good health, wealth, and prosperity. Although people in different parts of the country celebrate this same festival differently, the devotion and the story attached to it is the same.  It is believed that the Devi Durga fought against the Rakshasa Mahishasur for nine nights to protect the tri lokas – heaven, earth, and hell. She took nine forms to defeat the Demon. On the tenth day, i.e. the Dussehra, the victory of good ove
