H. Samuel owner donates £766k to Red Cross Ukraine

Signet Jewelers Limited, the owner of H .Samuels, has announced the foundation will donate £766k to the Red Cross Ukraine humanitarian relief efforts, through its global network. Signet has also suspended business interaction with Russian-owned entities since the beginning of the invasion, in unity with all those in the world calling for peace. According to the jewellers, the donation will help provide “much needed” food, medical supplies, shelter and ongoing crisis relief. To maximise individual giving, the Signet Love Inspires Foundation will also match donations from Signet team members by 2:1 up to £766 per person per year, to the Red Cross and other qualifying organisations to assist with the humanitarian relief efforts. Christies Jewel’s online auction tops £2m

Christie’s Jewels Online: La Dolce Vita auction, which took place between 1 and 10 March, achieved a total of £2,052,724, with 157% hammer above low estimate and 93% sold by lot. The auction attracted participation from 38 countries, across four continents, and 25% of bidders and buyers to sale were millennial collectors. Alrosa suspends Natural Diamond Council membership

The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) has announced that Alrosa has stepped down from the board and will cease all financial contributions to the organisation amid the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The NDC said its board of directors of the Natural Diamond Council received Alrosa’s decision to suspend its membership last week. The announcement follows the recent announcement that Alrosa voluntarily stepped down from its position as vice-chair of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), temporarily leaving the board of directors. The NDC said: “As an organisation, our thoughts remain with people impacted by the current geopolitical crisis.” Meanwhile, in a statement last week, the RJC said its team is supporting its 1,500 international members with guidance to comply with all applicable sanctions, together with the RJC COP requirements on due diligence within their supply chains. Brazilian exports of metals, precious stones and jewellery soars by 119%

The total volume of Brazilian metals, precious stones, and jewellery exports to the UK in 2021 soared by 119%, rising 37% by value to reach £648.8m, with demand “overwhelmingly concentrated” in precious stones and gold, according to Apex-Brasil. Metal ore exports also rose significantly, by 116% YOY, to reach £143.3m. Apex-Brasil said “the figures are a result of high global prices across most of Brazil’s export categories as well as strong demand in a number of sectors, but especially those linked to manufacturing and mining as the post-pandemic economic recovery pushed enthusiastic demand”. Rough diamond sales to reach £494m, De Beers says

The De Beers Group has announced the provisional value of rough diamond sales (Global Sightholder Sales and Auctions) has reached $650m (£494m) for the second sales cycle of 2022. De Beers said this represents the expected sales value for the period 21 February to 8 March and remains subject to adjustment based on final completed sales. Owing to the restrictions on the movement of people and products in various jurisdictions around the globe, De Beers Group said it has continued to implement a “more flexible approach to rough diamond sales during the second sales cycle of 2022, with the Sight event extended beyond its normal week-long duration”.
