Hallmarking climbs 35.8% in October

The total number of hallmarked pieces climbed 35.8% to 1,133,920 in October 2021, up from 835,049 for the same period in 2020.

According to the Birmingham Assay Office, silver saw the largest increase in hallmarked pieces, jumping 59.8% year-on-year.

While the 625,889 hallmarked silver pieces in October 2021 represented the largest volume of hallmarked pieces, platinum followed in second with 40,120.

Up from 30,337 in October 2020, the number of platinum hallmarked pieces rose 32.2% year-on-year.

Gold hallmarked pieces also increased 13.3% to 467,593 in October, against last year’s 412,761.

The only metal to see a fall in hallmarked pieces was palladium, which declined 17.6% year-on-year to 318 pieces in October 2021.
