Coll Sign: It’s all in the name!

When Glasgow jewellery business boss Steven Coll decided to source new client gifts, he turned to one of the remotest Hebridean islands off the coast of Scotland for inspiration.
And in a unique tie-up Steven’s family-owned Tom Coll Jewellery struck a deal with the Isle of Coll Distillery to produce specially labelled bottles of gin for their next batch of gifts.

Steven who now heads up the jewellery and watch business he and his late father Tom founded in 1984 explained: “We often give a little token of appreciation to clients when they buy something special from us.

“In the past we’ve had branded boxes of chocolates or specially baked fudge. We’re always on the lookout for something that little bit different when it comes to jewellery, and we decided to adopt the same strategy for our next thank-you present.

“We’d bought a bottle of Isle of Coll Gin as a birthday present for one of our friends at the end of 2021. When he opened it, he suggested right away we should find out about getting some bottles for our next client gift.

“The Coll name connection was a stand-out and fortunately Dougie Brown at the distillery on Coll liked the link too and agreed to work with us on the project.

“We had specially designed ‘watchstrap’ style labels printed for our own 20cl bottles. We’re delighted with them and we particularly like that the gin is made in Scotland and we’re supporting another Scottish-based business.

“We’re a small business that makes our own jewellery designs in-house and we liked the whole ethos of the distillery’s approach to their production. It’s a small but perfectly formed distillery with a focus on the detail – just like our team. We’d always check with the recipient if the gift of alcohol is acceptable – and if not, we have alternatives.

“So far the gin gift is proving popular, and we’ve already ordered our next batch of bottles.”

Dougie said: “As soon as Steven’s team mentioned the background and suggested we do a Coll collaboration our team said yes. It’s been good working with a business that’s so different from our own but stands by family values and a focus on quality.

“We hope Steven’s clients enjoy the gin as much as we’ve enjoyed working with their business to make it all happen. Corporate gifting is an area of business development which is key for our expansion plans going forward.”
