Raj Jain on the fascinating intricacies of vintage timepieces

Could you tell us a little bit about your career and what led up to you opening WatchCentre? I began buying watches in Bombay, on a holiday trip to India. I’ve always been based in London, but I would go to India every year, and in 1985, I visited the antiques market where I came across a lot of wristwatches – they were very abundant there at the time. I bought some because I was passionate about them, but afterwards I realised just how valuable they were and how much cheaper they were there than in the West. I then opened a showroom in Bombay, and although my holiday was for a few months, I ended up staying there five years, and I created one of the largest showrooms in Bombay. I came back to London in 1990 after five years and started my operation here, selling watches. What draws you to vintage pieces, and in your opinion, what is it about them that makes people want to invest in them?  People are drawn to vintage pieces because they have a styling from yesteryear. Obviously, the

7 Signs You're Buying Quality Jewelry

ছবি
It might look nice. It might fit well. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's quality jewelry.  So, that begs the question: how do you identify whether a piece of jewelry is quality or not? There are quite a few signs to look out for and we're going to discuss them now. Here are 7 signs you're buying quality jewelry.  1. There Isn't Glue Present A sure sign that your jewelry is of low quality is that it has glue on it. Luxury jewelry never makes use of glue. This is because the glue isn't strong enough to stay connected to jewelry over the years.  Instead, luxury jewelry makes use of more sophisticated attachment mechanisms. In most cases these days, they make use of prongs. These are metal attachments that hold the jewels in place.  Rest assured, if you buy jewelry with glue on it, it's going to break within a year or two. That can be okay if you're just spending a few dozen dollars on it. However, if you've spent a few hundred or a

Graff expands Wild Flower and Butterfly collections

Graff is expanding both its Wild Flower and Butterfly Silhouette collections with new pendants and earrings in 18ct yellow and rose gold. The new additions add to the previously available pieces in diamonds and white gold, and Graff said the jewels offer more ways to wear its motifs. The wings on the largest of the two new gold pendants in the Butterfly Silhouette collection are outlined in pavé diamonds, and the wings are angled for a sense of three-dimensionality. Additionally, new Wild Flower pendants and earrings have been added in 18 carat yellow and rose gold. Each golden petal is handcrafted, and the petals are edged in diamonds on the larger pendant. Anne-Eva Geffroy, design director at Graff, said: “As designers, we asked ourselves: how can we translate in gold something that works so well in diamonds? By retaining the lifelike volume of these treasured motifs, and embellishing them with elegant little details, each jewel shines with a simplicity and beauty that is pure G

The uplift in footfall across the UK diminished for the third consecutive month from +8.6% in August and +15.6% in July. Larkspur & Hawk’s Luiza Collection was inspired by antique Portuguese jewels.

ছবি
Larkspur & Hawk’s founder and designer, Emily Satloff, loves antique jewelry as much as we do – and I do not say that lightly, my darlings. Her latest release, Larkspur & Hawk‘s Luiza Collection, is an homage to one particular category of antique jewelry, a style and origin that makes most collectors of 18th century styles weak at the knees: antique Portuguese jewels. The use of subtly shimmering, foiled-back gemstones is Larkspur & Hawk’s aesthetic signature. The technique is very unusual to find in contemporary designs and it’s another sign of designer Satloff’s passion for blending the unique beauty of antique jewelry with modern design principles to create soft, romantic, utterly unforgettable new styles. Look at the lush, lovely gems of the Luiza Collection – they glow like sunrise suffusing morning mist. So What Exactly Are Huggie Earrings? Huggie earrings, often known as huggers, are earrings that don't use a back. Instead, a hinge at the top of the earring allows the post to open and shut. The word "huggie" comes from the fact that the earring is designed to sit snuggly against your earlobe. Huggie earrings were originally relatively tiny and practically enclosed the earlobe. However, because these earrings were so well received, jewelers

De Beers unveils new RVL collection

De Beers has launched its latest collection, ‘De Beers RVL’, which comprises a juxtaposition of mixed metals, including four 18k white gold and diamond pieces along with three in black titanium and 18k rose gold. The De Beers’ monogram inspired the collection’s aesthetic, with outlines of the ‘D’ and ‘B’ imprinted in the metal to form lines that resemble a code, and when viewed from the side, a gear. The 18k white gold pieces include a RVL Pendant in the shape of an irregular octagon, featuring rows of pavé-set diamonds, and a bracelet with a white gold barrel circumvented with diamond lines and threaded onto a black knotted cord. Additionally, a signet ring and a band complete the quartet. Meanwhile, a trio of black titanium and 18k rose gold pieces (including a pendant, bracelet and ring) contrast with the white gold pieces. The lines of this design are formed from depressions in the metal which have been lined with rose gold and include a brushed titanium surface. These pieces

Faberge unites with James Bond for 007 Egg Objet

Almost 40 years on from Octopussy’s famous Fabergé egg heist plot, the James Bond franchise is collaborating with the iconic brand off screen for the very first time, marking the 60th anniversary of 007 and Fabergé’s 180th celebrations. The Fabergé x 007 Egg Objet will aim to “encapsulate Bond’s stories within its design”, which will feature subtle references to Bond’s trademark gadgets. From a manufacturing perspective, the forthcoming egg will “showcase the most innovative and technologically advanced mechanisms Fabergé has accomplished to date.” Signature to Fabergé, the 007-collaborative piece will have a series of “surprising elements” which will be revealed in 2023, which also marks 40 years since Octopussy’s release. Despite being central to the story, the ‘Fabergé’ egg in the 1983 film was in fact a film prop set with Swarovski crystals, meaning the upcoming one-off egg is the first of its kind. Fabergé’s creative director, Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, said: “This is a th
