Bradley’s Jewellers has launched its new York Daffodil jewellery collection inspired by the golden blooms of spring flowers along the historic city’s walls around York minster and at clifford’s tower. Hancocks announces March jewel of the month

Hancocks has revealed its “jewel of the month” for March is a late Georgian gold and amethyst pendant necklace, which dates back from the 1820-30s. The necklace is formed of a “finely made gold chain, each circular link patterned with diagonal lines and joined to multiple others to form a twisted chain”. The pendant is set with an oval faceted amethyst estimated to weigh around 30cts and a bezel set in gold within a decorative floral scroll frame. Guy Burton, director of Hancocks, said: “This is a quintessentially Georgian jewel with its beautifully handmade chain and the decorative floral work in shades of pink, green, white and yellow gold. “The amethyst would have likely been intended to be engraved with a motto or phrase and therefore be used as a seal as well as worn as a jewel. Independent jewellery retail business, Bradley’s Jewellers York, has been named an accredited retailer under the SCS 007 Certified Sustainability Rated Diamond Standard by SCS Global Services, making it the first female-owned retailer in the UK to achieve such status. The brand offers a range of personalised necklaces and bracelets which can all be customised with engraving. The Alkemistry has announced it is set to expand its presence in the UK, following “triple digit e-commerce growth in 2020”. It has added a number of female founded brands to their product offering including fellow British brand, Dinny Hall and London centred Alice Van Cal. With a revenue growth of over 70% on both 2019 and 2020 numbers, the brand has attributed this success to the “increased own brand offering designed and created by founder and creative director, Kirstie Gibbs”. It has also seen overall gross profits grow by 5 points due to the expansion of its own brand product ranges. Petra Diamonds H1 profits surge to $91.1m

Petra Diamonds Limited has reported its adjusted pre-tax profits increased to $91.1m (£66.98m) for the six months ending 31 December 2021 (H1 FY22), compared to $6.5m (£4.77m) in H1 FY21 and an overall loss of $18.3m (£13.45m) for the full year in FY21. However, net profit after tax reduced to $49.1m (£36.1m) from $67.6m (£49.7m) which was impacted by negative non-cash foreign exchange movement amounting to $63.4m (£46.61m). Meanwhile, revenues were up 49% which was driven by the sale of Exceptional Stones totalling $77.9m (£57.27m), up 92% from $40.4m (£29.7m) in H1 FY21, and a 16% increase in rough diamond prices. Overall, Petra Diamonds’ revenues in H1 FY22 rose to $264.7m (£194.62m), up 47% year-on-year from $178.1m (£130.95m). Adjusted EBITDA also rose 87% reflecting improved prices, the sale of Exceptional Stones, and Project 2022 cost reductions during the period. New report indicates extent of high street challenge, says Bira

A report released by PwC about a study on how the high street is fairing shows how “challenging the high street continues to be”, according to The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira). The report, released this week, highlighted how store closures for chains and multiples slowed versus the last two years. However, it revealed vacant units in town and city centres are no longer being replaced by other chains, as the shift to retail parks continues in response to consumers’ changing location preferences. Storm Eunice curtails footfall rise

Storm Eunice “heavily impacted” footfall across the UK, with a -3.8% decline from the week before and drops in all three destination types, according to retail experts Springboard. However, it said the distortion created by the weather meant that the result between Sunday and Thursday was “wholly different from Friday and Saturday”; over the five days from Sunday, footfall rose by an average of +5.5% with a huge uplift of +18.1% on Monday as the school half-term break commenced. On Friday, footfall declined from the previous week by -32% and then by -12.6% on Saturday. In high streets, the results were even more extreme, with a drop of -36.6% on Friday and -17.9% on Saturday. The regional results reflect the impact of the storms, with only Greater London, Scotland and Northern Ireland recording increases in footfall, and even these were all less than +1%. Bira welcomes sales rise, but warns ‘all is not well’

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has said it is “pleased to see a rise in retail sales”, but warned retailers against “falling into the trap of thinking all is well”. It was commenting on the recently released figures by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the UK retail sales rebound in January, which highlighted how sales on the High Street have rebounded by 1.9% last month as shoppers returned after the disruption of the Omnicron variant. The statistics have shown that department stores, garden centres and other non-food shops have seen a strong growth, with a 3.4% rise, however food sales have fallen to pre-pandemic levels. Sales in December saw a 4% fall following new pandemic restrictions. Retail sales up 1.9% in January 2022

Retail sales volumes rose by 1.9% in January 2022 following a fall of 4.0% in December 2021, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics. It also revealed sales volumes were 3.6% above their pre-coronavirus (Covid-19) February 2020 levels. Non-food stores sales rose by 3.4% as home improvement “picked up” with increased sales in household goods and garden centres. Automotive fuel sales volumes rose by 4.1% in January 2022 following a fall of 5.0% in December when “increased” home working and lower retail footfall reduced travel. Accounting firm RSM accredit this rise in sales to the easing of Covid restrictions suggesting it has “offset” any “huge hit” from the cost of living crisis. However, both non-food sales and automotive sales remain below their February 2020 level. With a competitive UK market, jewellery sales nationwide are expected to increase by 34.2 % in 2022, according to auctioneering company John Pye. UK footfall rises for fifth consecutive week

Across UK retail destinations, footfall rose by +2.2% last week from the week before, with increases in each of the three destination types, according to Springboard. Footfall rose in all types of town centres, with the largest rise of +7.1% in regional cities outside of London versus +3.3% in Central London. Springboard’s Central London Back to the Office benchmark was in line with that of Central London as a whole, rising by +3% from the week before. The greatest uplift was on Friday when footfall rose by +8.7% overall and by +11.5% in high streets. The gap from the 2019 footfall level widened to -21.2% last week from -17.1% in the week before, however, footfall was +149% higher than in the same week in 2021 when Lockdown 3 was still in place. Hallmarking surges 119.9% in January

The total number of hallmarked pieces climbed 199.9% year-on-year in January to 821,734, compared to 373,720 in 2021. According to the Birmingham Assay Office, gold increased by 84.2% to 310,986 compared to 168,815 last January. Silver saw the highest increase, jumping 152.8% from 190,522 to 481,683. However, palladium fell 62.9% from 509 to 189, with a -320 drop in variance. Graff launches ‘Wild Flower’ collection

Graff, the multinational jeweller based in London, has announced the launch of its new ‘Wild Flower’ collection, in tribute to the English Garden and “modern femininity”. The diamond collection comprises earrings, necklace and rings made with floral jewels, and it includes four styles of flowers in different sizes and arrangements, from trios and individual blooms to floral clusters and blossoms laid out in a row. Each petal has reportedly been created with lightness, with the sculptural volumes and asymmetry “creating an effect of blooming vitality”. The pieces can be worn singly or paired in asymmetry, and Graff said each one of the jewels is “unique yet designed to complement its companions”. Christie’s jewellery auction reports ‘record’ participation

Christie’s first jewellery auction of 2022, Jewels Online, which ran between 24 January and 9  February achieved a total of $5,183,500 (£3,816,481), with 131% hammer above low estimate and 96% sold by lot.  According to the auction house, the sale received “record” participation with the highest number of bidders for any New York Jewels online sale. There was also global participation with registered bidders from 28 countries. Petra Diamonds Limited has appointed Jon Dudas as an independent non-executive director of the company, effective 1 March 2022. Dudas is currently chairman of Samruk-Kazyna, Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund, which he joined in 2020. Prior to this, he was an independent non-executive director and chairman of the National Atomic Company Kazatomprom. DMR Jewellery has introduced the new addition to its Valentine’s collection with the launch of its diamond ‘Love Lines’ collection. The collection comprises seven individual pieces of jewellery, including earrings, neckwear and wristwear. Two new styles of earrings have been launched to represent Cupid’s arrow, and customers are able to select from a diamond set or plain polished earrings crafted from 18ct yellow gold. Additionally, a diamond necklace, bracelet and stacking bangles have also been introduced in the collection to cater to the trend for layering jewellery. Consumer spending slows in January

Consumer card spending rose by only 7.4% in January compared to the same period in 2020, marking the smallest uplift since April 2021, as spending was dampened by ongoing Plan B restrictions, inflation, and rising energy costs. Data from Barclaycard found that spending on essential items grew by 10.4%, the smallest rise in nine months. It said this could be largely attributed to fuel spend seeing its slowest rate of growth (6.7%) since October 2021, as Plan B Covid restrictions throughout most of the month meant consumers travelled less and worked from home instead of commuting. Despite rising inflation, supermarket spending saw its smallest rise since before the onset of the pandemic at 13.6%. It comes as consumers reportedly shifted their spending to food and drink specialist retailers, such as butchers and recipe subscription service, which saw spending soar by 67.3%. Alrosa has announced its project to boost its sales division’s performance has resulted in the company reducing the amount of diamonds in the work-in-progress inventory by 4.3 million carats by the end of 2021, freeing up rough diamonds valued at over $300m (£221.37m) for sale. Alrosa said the project to accelerate its production processes and reduce its volume of work-in-progress inventories (the diamonds that have left the processing plant but are not yet ready for sale) has accelerated the pre-sale process in 2018-2021. This has reportedly helped “permanently reduce” the duration of the pre-sale production cycle by 30-40%, or 15-25 days depending on the type of goods, and Alrosa has released $320m (£236.13m) from working capital in the three year period.
